Homeopathic Treatment of Schizophrenia through BrainMindia Protocol
Homeopathic Treatment of Schizophrenia through BrainMindia Protocol Author: Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD Introduction Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder characterized by delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and impaired functioning. This case study examines the treatment of a 46-year-old female patient diagnosed with schizophrenia, using the BrainMindia Protocol, a homeopathic approach over a period of 12 months. Patient Profile Name: Nikita Kulkarni (changed) Age: 46 years Gender: Female Occupation: Event Manager Initial Symptoms: Auditory hallucinations, paranoid delusions, severe anxiety, disorganized thinking, and social withdrawal. Treatment Protocol The BrainMindia Protocol combines constitutional, therapeutic, and trituration homeopathic medicines tailored to the patient’s specific symptoms and overall health condition. Constitutional Medicines Stramonium 1M: Targeted severe mental disturbances, hallucinations, and fear. Hyoscyamus Niger 10M: Addressed symptoms of paranoia, delusions, and aggressive behavior. Therapeutic Medicines Helleborus Niger Q: Aimed at reducing confusion, improving memory, and addressing lethargy. Agaricus Muscarius Q: Used to alleviate anxiety, restlessness, and sensory disturbances. Trituration Zinc Cyanatum 3X: Improved cognitive function and reduced mental fatigue. Lithium Carbonicum 3X: Stabilized mood and enhanced emotional well-being. Treatment Timeline and Progress Initial Phase (0-2 Months) Medications Administered: Stramonium 1M and Hyoscyamus Niger 10M, in alternation, once a week. Helleborus Niger Q and Agaricus Muscarius Q, daily. Zinc Cyanatum 3X and Lithium Carbonicum 3X, twice daily. Observations: The patient reported a noticeable reduction in the frequency and intensity of auditory hallucinations. Paranoid delusions became less frequent, and anxiety levels decreased significantly. Improved sleep patterns and initial signs of social re-engagement were observed. Intermediate Phase (2-7 Months) Medications Administered: Continued with the same regimen, with periodic adjustments based on patient feedback and symptomatology. Observations: By the seventh month, there was considerable improvement in mental health. Hallucinations and delusions were significantly diminished, leading to better cognitive function. Anxiety was well-managed, and the patient resumed her professional responsibilities as an event manager. Social interactions improved, and the patient exhibited more stable emotions and mood. Final Phase (7-12 Months) Medications Administered: Dosages were gradually tapered as symptoms continued to improve. Emphasis was placed on maintaining stability and preventing relapse. Observations: By the end of the treatment period, the patient expressed satisfaction with the results. Sustained improvement in mental clarity, emotional stability, and social functionality was noted. Final evaluations showed no significant relapse, and the patient was managing her personal and professional life effectively. Conclusion The BrainMindia Protocol, utilizing a combination of constitutional, therapeutic, and trituration homeopathic medicines, proved effective in treating schizophrenia in this patient. The patient experienced significant symptomatic relief within the first two months and marked improvement by the seventh month, culminating in complete satisfaction by the end of the treatment period. This case study underscores the potential of homeopathy as a complementary treatment for schizophrenia, emphasizing the need for personalized treatment plans and regular monitoring. Follow-Up Regular follow-up sessions were scheduled post-treatment to ensure continued stability and monitor any potential recurrence of symptoms. Lifestyle modifications and supportive therapies were recommended to maintain mental health and enhance quality of life.
Which unhealthy foods should be avoided to minimize obsessions and compulsive behaviors in OCD patients?
Author : Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a special form of anxiety disorder which shows irrational and illogical obsessions along with strange baseless thoughts, ideas or sensations, and compulsive behaviors expressed with repetition. In this type of mental illness, patients urge to do something over and again, such as washing hands, repetitively checking things, etc. which hamper daily activities and social interactions. Psychiatrists prescribe anti-anxiety medication and clinical psychologists suggest psychotherapy and lifestyle modification for treatment. But avoiding certain foods, OCD symptoms can be controlled effectively. Stop eating Pastries, Candy, Soda and Sugary drinks. As these foods cause fluctuating blood sugar level leading to fatigue, mood swing and anxiety neurosis. Fluctuating blood sugar, because of excessive refined carbohydrates, takes the patients into hypoglycemic level causing OCD related severe mental confusion. Excessive sugar consumption also causes cognitive decline leading to baseless thoughts, ideas or sensations. Avoid eating Pizza, Burger and other processed foods. As these foods cause memory impairment and also impairs higher cognitive functioning leading to anxiety and mental depression. Fast foods lack omega-3-fatty acids, without which we suffer in mental anxiety. Potassium Bromate used in these foods cause thought process impairment and personality deviations. Synthetic food additive Propylene Glycol used in processed foods causes severe neurological symptoms including strange sensations. Don’t eat dark chocolate coated coffee beans, coffee liqueur, milk chocolate and chocolate cake with frosting. Excessive intake of these caffeinated foods can cause anxiety disorders and manifest other psychotic symptoms. Avoid canned soups, wheat bread and other Gluten-based foods. As Gluten causes mood swing, anxiety disorder and depressive syndromes. Excessive intake of Gluten-based foods also causes neuro-inflammation leading to brain dysfunction and cognitive impairment because of less serotonin production. If OCD patients can avoid these foods strictly, their obsessions and compulsive behaviors will be slowed down. So, stop eating Pastries, Candy, Soda and Sugary drinks. Avoid eating Pizza, Burger and other processed foods. Don’t eat dark chocolate, coffee liqueur, milk chocolate. Also, avoid canned soups, wheat bread and other Gluten-based foods. Sunday punch in Public Healthcare
Author: Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD [ Private medical establishments are playing ducks and drakes with the helpless common folk ] Government sponsored medical system in our country is fallen in profound critical situation. Governmental health-care infrastructure is about to break. Hungry India is taken aback in health and education. The condition of medical education is also extremely disorganized and in total disarray. Govt. has no concern to bring the renowned professors in the worn-out medical education. Emphasis in almost all provinces is being given on non-governmental medical infrastructure. Big political leaders and ministers today have no spare time to cudgel their brains about the health facilities of hundreds of thousands of poor starving common-folk! Step by step, so, the Central Govt. and all state governments have engaged doggedly to complete the process of inclusion of the poor people in the non-governmental healthcare industry having disorganized the govt. sponsored medical infrastructure subtly and on the sly. But, if the elected governments do not pay heed to the health problems of the poor and the low income group, then who else will espy? We need to have more professionalism to run the health department and its subordinate hospitals smoothly. And in the governmental system, this professionalism is quite possible to bring. But, the govt. in various pretexts is giving the chance of playing gamble with the community health to the non-governmental medical corporate organizations. In 2010, according to the investigation jointly done by UNDP and Oxford University – the number of poor people in 8 states (Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Rajasthan) of India is more than the total poor population of 26 African nations. Roughly 16 percent of total population of the world lives in India but according to nutrition measuring rod “Body Mass Index”, more or less 37 percent Indians are the victims of malnutrition. Almost 45 percent infants and children under 5 years of age of the country are continuously undernourished. More or less 50-55 percent scheduled castes and tribes are also having lack of nourishment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) standard, if 40 percent people of any community are undernourished, then that clan is considered as famine-stricken. So, the tribal society of our country today is seized by famine according to this definition. Then, how long will the so-called philanthropic Central Govt. and all the state governments of various political descriptions wind up the business? Don’t they know that the socio-economic prosperity of any community has direct relation with their good health conditions? I consider, not only those who are in below poverty line – rather all the citizens of the nation should be brought under the rationing system, because, if all the people stay in the same system, mass-consciousness is increased about that system and its efficiency is ubiquitous as well. This extreme poverty of the vast concourse of people in the country – its consequence is only a dreadful health-disaster – which is practically nothing but a big genocide. In any country, if the good result of education, health and poverty-eradication is not made to the all walks of life realize – the confirmation of socio-economic development of that nation is not possible. So, the object of the Govt. of India should be the time-bound overall improved standard of living of the great multitude of common people, only the increase of personal earnings and aslant economic development is not desired. According to the opinion of United Nations, desired advancement couldn’t be occurred in India in the sector of health and education because of shortage of food-grains and curtailment of budget proposals seriatim in the public interest sectors, such as, education, health and infrastructure development, etc. Food security and the right to having food in our country gradually have become political issues and the food security law has been confined only within the electoral promises. Because, in spite of increasing national per capita income since last two decades, no central government till date betimes did pay heed to this common peoples important burning problem of food security. Almost every government has also been foiled to confirm the supply of daily food-stuffs for the masses. On the contrary, the entire nation is heading towards a form of uncertain crisis because of under-nourishment, intaking of low-calorie per capita diet, giving birth under-weight baby and increased death-rate of emaciated malnourished children. This panic-stricken fragmented picture has been cropped up from the information given by the “National Family Health Survey” (NFHS). According to the report of “Food Hunger Index” under “International Food Policy Research Institute”, our state of Bihar or Jharkhand in the rate of price of shortage of food-grains is for more behind Haiti and Zimbabwe which are very poor countries. Our Madhya Pradesh is also far behind from ever-deprived Ethiopia. A general section picture can be gotten from the report of “National Family Health Survey” which corroborates the nationwide created health-crisis because of non-availability of food-grains. This survey is making us known with great concern that, according to “Body Mass Index”, 37 percent female and 29 percent male are undernourished in comparison with the necessity. Roughly, 47 percent infants and children under the age of three are malnourished and 56 percent pregnant women are also stricken with anaemia. Besides urban health crisis, rural health-scenario is also how much cruel and hard -hearted, we all know! How much economic advancement be occurred in India, we are far more behind in over-all standard of living along with proper community health. India’s position is still 119-th according to “Human Development Report (2010)”. In spite of having 8.9 percent economic growth, the nation is almost stagnant in the field of health and education for the futility of poverty eradication. In almost all developed countries there is a custom of making the patient and his / her relatives understand about the type of the disease and the procedure of treatment. In those countries, printed medical booklets are available about the diseases to make the patients understand.
Clinical Research: Role of Phosphorus in the treatment of Paranoid Schizophrenia
Author: Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD Keywords: Phosphorus, paranoid schizophrenia, hallucinations, delusions Abstract: Purpose / Objective – i) An observational study was done to evaluate and ascertain the action of Phosphorus in management of paranoid schizophrenia. ii) To verify the effect of Phosphorus on hallucinations and delusions characterized in paranoid schizophrenia. iii) To determine the usefulness of Phosphorus for the management of disorganized thinking and lack of interest in social activities along with suicidal thoughts manifested in paranoid schizophrenia. iv) To assess the scope of Homeopathy in chronic psychiatric diseases. Methods and Materials – i) This was a prospective observational study of 45 paranoid schizophrenia patients, who took Homeopathy treatment at my private clinic in Kolkata from 2013 to 2018. The study was not funded by any institute or organization. ii) Patient of both sexes between the age group of 20-50 years were selected for the prospective study. iii) Inclusion Criteria – (a) The cases of paranoid schizophrenia have been considered only. (b) The cases in the age group of 20-50 years have been considered only. (c) The cases treated by Phosphorus have been considered only. iv) Exclusion Criteria – (a) The cases of Catatonic Schizophrenia, Hebephrenic Schizophrenia, Residual Schizophrenia, Undifferentiated Schizophrenia, etc. were not considered for the study. (b) The cases of paranoid schizophrenia treated by other Homeopathic remedies were not considered. v) Selection of Medicine – The investigator of the study took the cases, interviewed the patients and their relatives, and analyzed the cases in the proper case recording pro forma. The predefined medicine, Phosphorus 200, was administered. vi) Prescription / Intervention – Phosphorus 200 were given in aqua distillata, once a day for 30 days. Then the potency was increased gradually till 1M, 10M, 50M as per requirement of the respective cases. Higher potencies were administered once a week. Arsenicum Album 30 was used as complementary medicine. At the outset, the medicine was started as per the requirement of the cases. The same medicine, dose and potency were continued till the favourable satisfactory improvement of symptoms started flowing in. And according to the severity of the individual case, the frequency of the repetition of doses was decided by the investigator. In most of the cases, treatment process was of 12 months. Observations and Results – 45 patients, those who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were selected for the study. Out of which, 19 patients were male and 26 patients were female. 42 patients had completed the follow-up process and 3 patients did not turn up for treatment for unknown reasons. 16 male patients and 26 female patients completed the regimen of the treatment of 12 months with regular follow-up of 2 months. Total 27 patients showed remarkable improvement, hallucinations and delusions were almost gone, disorganized thinking got controlled, lack of motivation and lack of attention to hygiene managed considerably, they also started showing interest in social activities – social isolation managed. Most patients got relieved from suspiciousness and general fear of other’s intentions, their persistent unusual thoughts or beliefs were controlled subsequently. A significant decline in self-care along with withdrawing from family or friends, which were prime symptoms in paranoid schizophrenia were managed within 3-4 months. Those patients were not given medicine continuously but placebo was prescribed regularly and observation was noted. In the complete study period of 12 months, these 27 patients showed no relapse of symptoms and reported no adverse events. Total 9 patients showed only partial improvement of less important symptoms. They had to be administered higher potencies and complementary medicine. In the complete study process, some of them experienced moderate improvement of symptoms. Rest of the sample population showed no sign of improvement at all. Conclusion – This study established the clinical efficacy of Homeopathic medicine in managing paranoid schizophrenia. From the above results and observations, it was concluded that Phosphorus hastens the curative process in chronic paranoid schizophrenia. No adverse effects were recorded when Homeopathic remedy Phosphorus was administered. It is concluded from the large percentage of symptomatic relief that Phosphorus is very much useful in treating the symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. Though modern medicine in case of psychiatric diseases may offer palliative treatment with strong possibility of drug dependence, but Homeopathy through its unique approach can not only provide symptomatic relief but can also prevent further progress of the disease. The outcome of this evidenced-bases study is encouraging, as it proves that Homeopathy can provide a safe and effective treatment in chronic psychiatric patients.
Homeopathic Treatment for Schizophrenia
Author : Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD Schizophrenia is a chronic serious mental disorder which impairs the thought process of a person, distorts emotions, and mars reality testing of the patient. To some extent it is split or multiple personality, but it involves some psychotic episodes with strange and shocking behavior including some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disorganized thinking that impairs daily functioning. Types of Schizophrenia? 1. Paranoid schizophrenia This paranoid-type develops later in life than other types of schizophrenia. Symptoms include auditory hallucinations and delusions, but patient’s speech and emotions may not be affected. Paranoid behavior is exhibited by feelings of persecution and may display anger, anxiety, and hostility but having relatively normal intellectual functioning and expression of affect. 2. Hebephrenic or Disorganized schizophrenia Disorganized-type of schizophrenia patients exhibit disorganized behaviors and speech paterns that may be difficult to understand with inappropriate emotions or facial reactions. Because of their disorganized thought patterns, they face trouble with daily activities and they experience disruption in hygiene, eating and normal working. 3. Undifferentiated schizophrenia This type of schizophrenia patients display two or more types of schizophrenia symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior, word salad along with catatonic behavior, etc. Clinicians in these cases cannot differentiate this type with diagnostic criteria because of the presentation of variety of symptoms. 4. Catatonic schizophrenia Catatonic type of patients shows contradictory behaviors such as immobility along with a stupor-like condition, mutism, mimicking behavior and disturbances of movement. This kind of patients is often unable to take care of them or perform daily activities. They may stay mum without saying anything for hours, or they may repeat everything others say or do. 5. Residual schizophrenia Residual type of schizophrenia patients stays a past history of at least one episode of schizophrenia, but at present they have no prominent symptoms (delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech or behavior). Sometimes patients may resume minor symptoms with lower intensity or they may be in complete remission. This type usually includes with some negative symptoms, such as, slow movement, psychomotor difficulties, flattened affect, lack of concentration, poor hygiene and slowed speech. 6. Cenesthopathic schizophrenia Cenesthopathic type of schizophrenia patients experience unusual bodily sensations. But clinicians get this type of patients rarely. 7. Childhood schizophrenia Childhood schizophrenia is fairly uncommon, but when it occurs, it may be severe in nature. Early-onset schizophrenia usually occurs between the ages of 13 and 18. A diagnosis under the age of 13 is extremely rare. Older children and teenagers show symptoms as social withdrawal, sleep disruptions, impaired school performance, abnormal motor movements, irritability, peculiar behavior, substance use, etc. Early warning signs of Schizophrenia? Patients show general indifference to life being emotionless and abandoning hobbies and activities. Social withdrawal, irrational statements and strange use of words are common in this early phase of schizophrenia. They also experience hostility or suspiciousness, extreme reaction, deterioration of personal hygiene, oversleeping or insomnia which seek medical intervention. Symptoms of Schizophrenia? Symptoms of Delusions: Delusions of persecution – This often involves peculiar ideas and fantasies. In persecutory delusions the patients feel they are being stalked, hunted, framed, or tricked. Somatic delusions – In this category of patients think they have a terrible illness or violent health problem like worms under the skin or damage from cosmic rays. Delusions of reference – Patients believe to have a special and personal meaning in a neutral environment. Grandiose delusions– Patients believe that they are a famous or major important figure on the world stage, like a philanthropist or politician, such as Gautama Buddha or Mahatma Gandhi. Alternately, delusions of grandeur may involve the belief that they have unusual powers, such as the ability to fly. Erotomanic delusions – Patient is convinced that a celebrity is in love with him or her. Delusions of control – Patients believe that their thoughts and actions are managed by remote-control authority from outside forces. Thought broadcasting and thought withdrawal are the common delusions of control. Religious delusions – Some patients think they have a special relationship with a deity, god or goddess or that they’re possessed by a demon from the inferno. Symptoms of Hallucinations: Sounds or other sensations experienced as real when they stay only in patient’s mind are called hallucinations. But only auditory and visual hallucinations are most common in schizophrenia. Olfactory, gustatory and tactile hallucinations are less experienced. Symptoms of Disorganized Speech: Disorganized speech is common in schizophrenia because patients have trouble concentrating and maintaining a train of thought which is manifested by incoherent speaking with illogical sayings. Important signs of disorganized speech include: Loosening of associations – Patients rapidly shift from topic to topic, with no connection between one thought and the subsequent. Clang – Some patients use meaningless rhyming words to and fro. Neologisms – They make words or phrases that only have meaning to the patients. Perseveration –Patients say the same thing over and over with repetition of words and statements. Symptoms of Disorganized Behaviour: Schizophrenia patients exhibit disorganized behavior impairing their ability to take care of themselves. They experience behaviors that appear strange and have no purpose, with a decline in overall daily functioning following unpredictable or inappropriate emotional responses and lack of inhibition and impulse control. Negative Symptoms (with absence of normal behavior): Lack of pleasure – Enjoyment of life impaired. Clinicians call this condition as anhedonia. Lack of emotional expression – Schizophrenia patients have blank or restricted facial expressions with inexpressive face, including a flat voice and lack of eye contact. Seeming lack of interest in the world – Social withdrawal and apparent unawareness of the environment are guiding features in some cases. Lack of interest or enthusiasm –Lack of self-care and problems with motivation are important symptoms in various types of schizophrenia patients. Speech difficulties and abnormalities – Patients speak in a monotone and they face inability to carry a conversation; short and sometimes disconnected replies to questions. Clinicians call this condition as alogia. Causes of Schizophrenia? Structural and neuro-chemical changes in the brain along with impairment of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine may cause the disease. Other factors which
Homeopathic Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease
Author : Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD Parkinson’s Disease is a degenerative disorder in the nervous system that affects mostly on dopamine-secreting neurons in substantia nigra, a specific area of the brain. This neuro-degenerative illness affects the part of the brain which coordinates normal body movements. In the early stage of this progressive disease, patients experience noticeable tremor in just one hand, swing and walking, slurred speech, even stiffness or slowness of movement along with staggering gait. Important Signs and Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease Bradykinesia (Slowness of movement) – Parkinson’s Disease causes slowed physical movement in upper and lower extremities, making easy and simple tasks difficult and time-consuming. Steps of the patients become shorter when they walk; they feel difficulty to get out of bed or chair. They may drag their feet when they try to walk. Tremor – Shaking usually begins in a single limb, usually at hand, arm or fingers. Rigidity of Muscles – Muscular stiffness can occur at any part of the bogy which may be painful and limit the patient’s range of motion. Impaired Automatic Movements – Patients experience diminished ability to perform unconscious movements, including blinking of eyes, smiling and swinging of arms when they walk. Postural Instability and loss of Balance – Stooping postures with instable balance are common Parkinson Disease. Dystonia – Patients cannot move around and fail to make normal facial expressions because of the tension and rigidity in the muscles resulting in painful muscular cramps. Dystonia is a form of uncontrollable painful muscle spasm. Slurred Speech – Patients hesitate while talking. Speech become more of a monotone rather than with the natural inflections. Writing Disorganized – People with Parkinson Disease feel hard to write anything on paper and their writing may appear smaller. Other Physical and Mental Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease Anosmia (Loss of sense of smell) – The sense of smell of the patients is lost or changed unpleasantly. Neural Pain – Unpleasant sensations, like burning or numbness may occur sometimes. Incontinence of Urine – Patients are compelled to get up frequently to urinate during the night or they pass urine involuntarily. Constipation – Most Parkinson patients suffer in obstinate constipation. Hyperhidrosis – Excessive sweating affects the whole body in this condition. Erectile Dysfunction – Male patients suffer in impotency causing inability to sustain penile erection. Orgasmic Dysfunction – Women face difficulty to become sexually aroused and do not enjoy orgasm. Dysphagia (Difficulty swallowing) – Some patients cannot swallow foods easily leading to malnutrition and dehydration. Drooling – Excessive production of saliva in the mouth may occur. Insomnia – Sleeplessness at night results in excessive sleepiness in day-time. Some patients experience uncontrollable movement during sleep. Mental Depression and Anxiety – Feelings of uneasiness or fear and low mood can occur with mental confusion. Dementia – Mild cognitive impairment along with problems with activities which require planning and organization may occur with symptoms of memory loss. Psychosis – Hallucinations and delusions may occur in Parkinson patients as a non-motor symptom. Thought Blocking – In more advanced stage of Parkinson Disease, problems with thinking and finding of proper words are common. Change of Personality – This can cause impulse control disorders with other impulsive behaviors. Types of Parkinson’s Disease Primary Parkinsonism – The majority of people around 80% suffer in this idiopathic type whose cause is unknown. Secondary Parkinsonism – Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) – A type of Parkinsonism with progressive neuro-degenerative condition with numbness and loss of coordinated movement causing difficulties in dressing, writing, eating. etc. Drug-induced Parkinsonism – It is a form of Parkinson Disease which occurs after taking certain medicines. Some neuroleptic and antipsychotic drugs block the action of neurotransmitter dopamine causing staggering of gait and other movement disorders. Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) – This progressive neurological disease triggers over-production of a brain-protein called alpha synuclein which causes nerve cell degeneration and atrophy in several areas of the brain stem, cerebellum and basal ganglia. This nerve-cell degeneration can result movement disorders and other unconscious body functions. Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) – This neurodegenerative brain disease causes fronto-temporal dementia along with impairment of balance, speech and thought process. Vascular Parkinsonism – Stroke symptoms appear suddenly in this type of arteriosclerotic Parkinsonism which usually affects more in the lower extremities. Restricted blood supply to the brain is occurred in this type usually more older people who have been suffering in diabetes, including symptoms of urinary incontinence, loss of memory and walking difficulties. Causes of Parkinson’s Disease? Neurotransmitter Death – Dopamine is made from substansia nigra in the brain. If the dopaminergic neurons those are responsible for secreting dopamine start to die gradually, dopamine level decreases resulting to Parkinson symptoms. Gene Abnormality – Genes are, we know, our body’s instruction book. If our genetic code is changed anyway, our physical system starts working in a different way causing movement disorder, slowed movement, slurred speech, etc. Single genetic mutation in the LRRK2 gene is the greatest genetic cause of Parkinson Disease. Environmental Cause – Modern research indicates that some chemicals and metals show links with Parkinsonism. Chemicals used in farming, such as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, and also metals used in factories, such as lead, manganese and trichloroethylene may trigger the disease. Previous Head Injury – If anyone had suffered serious head injury earlier with loss of consciousness, he or she may prone to suffer in Parkinson Disease late in life. Presence of Alpha-synuclein within Lewy Body – Some microscopic markers stay within our brain cells as clumps of specific substance called Lewy bodies. An important natural and widespread protein named alpha-synuclein is found within Lewy bodies can trigger the cause of the disease, How is Parkinson’s Disease Diagnosed? There is no specific test for the diagnosis of Parkinson Disease. Neurologists consider the disease based on the neurological and physical history. If necessary, doctors may suggest a scan called Dopamine Transporter Scan (DTS) which is a single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) scan. Imaging tests, such as, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scan, Computed Tomography
Homeopathic Treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Author: Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD What is OCD? Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric illness which causes repeated unwanted obsessive recurring thoughts and sensations, along with the compulsive behavior to urge to do something time and again. Severe anxiety and significant mental distress are the key features in OCD. A person with OCD may experience intrusive thoughts with a wide range of psychotic functional impairments. Types of OCD? OCD of Mental Contamination and cleanliness: Patients feel mental contamination along with a fear of things that might be dirty or a compulsion to clean. OCD of Checking for safety: Patients repeatedly check door-locks, alarm systems, ovens, or light switches, etc. They are having irrational fears about safety. OCD of Ruminations and intrusive thoughts: Patients may experience an obsession with a special line of vulgar thought. OCD of Hoarding: Patients find it impossible to dispose of anything. Old newspapers, clothes, mails, and other objects are collected for no apparent reason. OCD of Symmetry and ordering: Patients prefer to have the need to keep things lined up in a specific way. They are obsessed with symmetry and order as they rearrange books, cutlery, or aligning carpets, pillows and cushions, repeatedly to relieve their anxiety. Signs and symptoms of OCD? Repetitive thoughts and intrusive thoughts which patients do not able to control. They want to do things in ‘just right’ way with some uncontrollable disturbing feelings, such as fear, disgust, doubt, etc. Patients spend an unwarranted amount of time on obsessions, which badly interferes with personal, socio-cultural, and professional activities. Unwanted sexual thoughts, perfectionism including concerns about exactness, religious obsessions, contamination including germs and dirt, washing mania, mental compulsions including praying to prevent harm, fear of being contaminated by touching objects others have touched, are red-line symptoms of OCD. Causes of OCD? As a genetic factor OCD may sometimes be inherited from the parent. Chemical imbalance of serotonin and glutamate in the brain because of neuro-biological impairment may cause OCD. Major life situation changes and severe trauma may also be the etiology. Because of a streptococcal infection in children due to inflammation and dysfunction in the basal ganglia, some rapid-onset cases of OCD may occur as autoimmune cause, which is called as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS). Risk factors of OCD include intense stress, severe anxiety and major depression. Management of OCD? Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), 2. Meditation and Relaxation practice, 3. Neuro-modulation with transcranial magnetic stimulation, are used as management procedures. Homeopathic Treatment of OCD? Along with OCD, I have seen, many patients are fearful and nervous and have impulse to jump out of window, faintish and tremulous, having errors of perception and they want to do things in a hurry with peculiar mental impulses. The remedy in those cases I selected is Argentum Nitricum higher potencies. When I got OCD patients with alternating moods, very irritable, full of fear and imaginations, never want to be left alone and obstinate and hypersensitive to pain, noise and touch, I preferred to prescribe Kali Carbonicum higher dilutions. I got great result using Stannam Metalicum 200 as complementary medicine after 2-3 months of treatment. Some OCD patients are apathetic, feels as if going insane or being paralyzed, fears the night, and the suffering from exhaustion on awakening, hopeless, despairs of recovery. And also when they are having loss of memory and remember everything previous to his illness, I consider Syphilinum 10M or 50 M to start with for controlling obsession and compulsions. For therapeutic use, I have been giving Apocynum Cannabinum Q (Mother Tincture), Serum Anguillae 7x and Rhamnus California Q, and Lithium Benzoicum 3x (Trituration), Ammonium Valerianicum 8x for symptomatic relief. Most of the OCD patients are cured by homeopathic medicines; rest can be managed to some extent. But none of these homeopathic medicines for OCD should be taken without professional advice from a consultant Homeopath in Neuro-Psychiatry. How to change our life-style for stronger Immunity System?
Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD Stop taking alcohol and nicotine – Give up smoking and consuming alcoholic beverages at the earliest to function your immune response properly. Do moderate exercise everyday – Brisk walking, bicycling, jogging, swimming, etc. promote the healthy turnover of our body immune cells. Eat rainbow vegetables – Colourful fruits and vegetables are full of anti-oxidants which guard against harmful free radicals and enhance positive immune response. Eat orange, broccoli, kiwi, strawberries, carrot, avocado, etc. Limit your sugar intake – Added sugar leads to overweight and obesity which may suppress our natural immunity. Manage your stress – Prolonged pathological stress and anxiety suppress our immune cell function. We can lower our stress levels through yoga, pranayama, meditation and other mindfulness practices. Laughter can also reduce stress; so read and listen good jokes which trigger our sense of humour. Avoid processed foods and drinks – Processed foods compromise our body immune system seriously, which include artificial preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, texture enhancing chemicals, artificial colours and flavours, mono-sodium glutamate (MSG), synthetic trans fats, refined carbohydrates, etc. so, avoid junk foods, sugary soft drinks, pastry, frozen pizza, juice cocktail, etc. Get adequate sleep – Poor quality sleep leads to higher susceptibility to sickness. Plenty of good quality sleep may strengthen our natural immunity system.

How to cope up with mental stress, panic disorder, fear psychosis and social uncertainty from CoronaVirus anxiety during lockdown?
Author : Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar, PhD In the midst of this worldwide pandemic, we are into a state of overwhelming dread and panic. There are some useful tips which can help us get through this stressful situation. 1. Avoid overconsumption of electronic, print and social media – Try to limit your consumption of media stories related to the virus outbreak. Medical scientists and public health officials are working overtime to better understand the virus and are looking at ways to limit its impact. Trust in their work and efforts. 2. Stay informed, but don’t obsessively check the news and stories – We have to stay informed, particularly about what’s happening in our community, and we have to follow advised safety precautions and do our part to slow the spread of coronavirus. But there’s a lot of misinformation going around that only feeds into fear. Believe only to trustworthy sources such as the World Health Organization and our local public health authorities. We have to limit how often we check for updates. Constant monitoring of news and social media feeds can quickly turn compulsive and counterproductive, fueling anxiety rather than easing it. We also have to be careful about what we share – do your best to verify information before passing it on. We all need to do our part to avoid spreading rumors and creating unnecessary panic. 3. Only focus on the things you can control – We need not focus things outside of our control. If we focus on questions with unknowable answers and circumstances outside of our personal control, this strategy will get us nowhere. We will only feel stressed, panicked and frightened. We can’t control how severe the coronavirus outbreak is in our city or town, but we can take steps to reduce our own personal risks, such as, washing our hands frequently (for at least 20 seconds) with soap and water or a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol, avoiding touching our face (particularly our eyes, nose, and mouth), staying home as much as possible, even if we don’t feel sick, avoiding crowds and gatherings of 10 or more people, avoiding all non-essential shopping and travel, keeping 6 feet of distance between yourself and others when out, getting plenty of sleep, which helps support our immune system, and all recommendations from healthcare authorities. 4. Take good care of your health and spirit – Practice self-care in the face of this unique disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. (a) Maintain a routine as best you can. Even if you’re stuck at home, try to stick to your regular sleep, meal, or work schedule. This can help you maintain a sense of normalcy. (b) Take time out for activities you enjoy. Read a good book, watch a comedy, play a fun board or video game, make something – whether it’s a new recipe, a craft, or a piece of art. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as it takes you out of your worries. (c) Get out in nature, if possible. Sunshine and fresh air will do you good. Even a walk around your neighborhood can make you feel better. Just be sure to avoid crowds, keep your distance from people you encounter, and obey restrictions in your area. (d) Find ways to do exercise. Staying active will help you release anxiety, relieve stress and manage your mood. If you’re stuck at home, look online for exercise videos you can follow. There are many things you can do even without equipment, such as yoga, pranayama and exercises that control your own bodyweight. (e) Avoid self-medicating. Be careful that you’re not using alcohol or other substances to deal with anxiety or depression. If you tend to overdo it in the best of times, it may be a good idea to avoid for now. (f) Take up relaxation practice. When stressors throw your nervous system out of balance, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can bring you back into a state of equilibrium. Regular practice delivers the greatest benefits, so see if you can set aside even a little time every day.
Helping Hands for Humanity should be our Mission
Author: Dr. Jakir Hossain Laskar God has given us two hands – one for helping yourself and another for helping others. The purpose of human life is not to achieve so-called happiness with one hand. True happiness comes only when we extend our helping hands for humanity. Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others. Small acts of helping others are the biggest thing in human achievement. When we reach out to those in dire need, we will achieve greatness – service to humanity is considered service to God. No person in this world has ever become poor by sacrificing for others. No one has ever become worthless by minimizing the burdens of another. The wound of mind can only be healed by kindness and compassion. Those who make life beautiful for others are the only blessed persons. We should do charity with great love and affection to the poor, helpless and underprivileged. Love and respect is the most important virtue of human personality – it is like an investment, whenever we give love and respect to others, it will return to us with profit. Generosity is expressed as an act of love which is the heart of humanity. Humanity is greater than wealth, character is greater than beauty and sacrifice is greater than love. So, those who sacrifice their lives for mankind are the messengers of God. Most of the bad things start from mind but all beautiful things start from our heart. So, we should never let the mind rule our heart – instead let the heart rule our mind. Caring to others is a gift that we cannot buy. We all know, health does not come from medicine – most of the time it comes from the peace of mind, heart and soul. Likewise, happiness in human life does not come from wealth; it comes from sacrificing by extending helping hands for humanity. We must not run away from danger, we should run towards danger, to see if someone needs help. If we can become mad for doing good to others, there will have no suffering and misery in the world. Taking care of your own family is good, taking care of your neighbours-friends-relatives is better, but taking care of unknown families is the best. If we are not able to become a big banyan tree, at least we can be like a small jackfruit tree under the shade of which a few people can take rest. Likewise, if we cannot help many people, no matter – at least we can try to help a few people, as we all have the ability to make this world a better place. Caring for others is the best way to fulfill our interests. Helping others is the best effort to raise human dignity. Little things done with love and dignity are much better than big things without love and respect. If we help poor people achieve their dreams, we become rich by helping the poor. A life dedicated to serving others is the life we should all aspire to live. People who help others on a regular basis are ten times more likely to be healthy than people who do not. We should not pray for help; instead we should pray to God for the ability to help others. Our act of kindness blossoms our lives with gladness. Good deeds awaken the good spirit of our soul. When we open our doors to others, automatically others will keep their doors open for us. A giving heart is surely one of the most precious things on human civilization. The happiest people are not those who are getting more, but those who are giving more. The happiest people are those who lose themselves in the service of others. Which is why, we should help for those who cannot help themselves; we should speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Service to others is the rent we pay for our home here on earth. The best exercise in social life is bending down to lift someone else up. Those who have much, give to your wealth; those who have little, give to your heart. If you plant flowers in others’ gardens, your life will become a bouquet. Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. So, we should set our mission to help people by charity with extending our helping hands for humanity. Our life is like a notebook – two pages are already written by God. First page of our life is birth and last page is death. Center pages are empty – we should take oath to fill those pages with smile, love and charity.
